Solar Power in Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is the world’s worst connected place. Although it has 13 percent of the world’s population, only 48 percent have access to electricity. This means that almost 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity. Despite this lack of electricity, it is projected that sub-Saharan Africa will consume nearly 1,600 terawatt hours by 2040, four times what was used in 2010. As fossil fuel prices are increasing as the supply becomes more limited, there is great potential for renewable energy sources in Africa.

Why Solar Power is Perfect for Africa?

Africa receives many more hours of bright sunshine during the course of the year than any other continent of the Earth. In fact, six of the world’s sunniest countries on earth are on the African continent. It therefore has enormous potential to invest in solar power.

Map shows that Africa gets the most solar radiation than any other continent on the planet.

Benefits of Solar Power

Whilst the majority of the world’s currently electricity supply is generated from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, these traditional energy sources face a number of challenges including rising prices, over dependence on imports from countries with significant fossil fuel reserves, lack of accessibility and growing environmental concerns over the climate change risks associated with power generation us.

Solar has the potential to solve all these challenges as:

1. It is free and simple to retrieve the energy from the sun, making it significantly cheaper than electricity produced by fossil fuels, which are costly to retrieve and supply.

2. It does not require use of fossil fuels and therefore is not reliant on this limited and expensive natural resource. This makes it better for the environment.

3. Anyone can access the energy from the sun, meaning anyone can use solar power as a source of electricity. This reduces reliance on countries that are rich in fossil fuels.

4. It can be utilised at various scales, making it suitable from the household and the community levels to industrial and national scale operations.
